A vintage Herman Miller black Eames arm shell with stunning seafoam Girard designed upholstery and replaced original light ash wood RAR base is a great blend. The vinyl finish is easy to clean whilst looking stunning with its great shade of seafoam and on the rocking base makes it a coveted lounge piece.
The Eames shells have barely changed through their long life, retaining their modern feel with flare. Throughout their production, however, the introduction of new bases to maintain the versatility of the chairs along with the coveted upholstered range designed with the help of Alexander Girard were introduced to ensure the chairs retained their modern look.
Individual Characteristics
The arm shell is in very good condition for its age with only some light marking along the edging. It does appear to have some aged staining to the vinyl, but an hour or so of cleaning will help reduce this.
The ‘S’ inside the circle indicates this shell came from Herman Miller’s Summit Prime factory in Michigan at the point of changing production from GATC (the double triangle logo).
Investment Details
The Eames shells are a great investment piece, but many factors affect how valuable they are. The origin of the shell, its age and even the colour can have an effect on its value. The upholstery would need a bit of a spruce up, but with the condition of the shell on this particular chair it should prove to be a good investment piece.
