The original design idea the Eames had in mind. This all original Herman Miller black molded plywood DSW chair is extremely stylish and a real statement piece! Due to limitations at the time, the curved shape of the shell could not be realized in molded plywood, but thanks to modern technology, now it can be!
The traditional design we are used to seeing is the iconic – and highly successful – fiberglass version of these classic chairs and their popularity is undeniable. Following the re-introduction of the fiberglass version, Herman Miller also offered the design in a range of natural wood finishes featuring natural ash, walnut, black finished ash – as seen here – and santos palisander.
Individual Characteristics
This wonderful example of a very unique chair is in very good used condition. Only found in the US, it would prove to be a great piece to add to any collection. The black is gorgeous with its deep finish and the grain coming through but displays some slightly heavier signs of use along the top and around the edges.
The original DSW base is in a good, used, condition.
The black rectangular label on the underside indicates this is an original Herman Miller shell and the second label dates it as 2017.
Investment Details
The investment value of these beautiful chairs depends on many factors: the age and condition of the shell, the rarity of its colour, the age of the base and where the shell was produced. Only found within the US, this chair is definitely a rarity and, with it realizing the dream the Eames’s had for their original design, it should prove to be a rather good investment piece.
