Blue on Black Herman Miller Vintage Original Eames Upholstered DSR Side Shell
A vintage, original Herman Miller Eames black fibreglass DSR dining side chair finished with blue vinyl material, looks great on its new, used black Effiel base. The deep indigo blue is a bold and exciting choice for a chair, especially combined with the stark black, perfect as an addition to an office or dining table.
The Eames shells require little introduction with prototypes beginning in the 1940s, production began in 1950. Arm shells were the first to be produced and the side shells were introduced in 1952/1953.
Alexander Girard was commissioned to help design a wide variety of upholstery finishes for both the side and arm shells, providing an alternative to the standard fiberglass shells and expanding the buying options for these chairs.
This blue vinyl DSR chair is in used condition, with some marks and tear on the stitching of the vinyl. For it to be in a perfect condition, parts of the fabric need to be restored, however, it is normal considering its vintage age. The fibreglass shell is in good condition- further images are available upon request.
The ‘S’ within the circle indicates this shell was produced at Herman Miller’s Summit Plastics factory.
The Eames shells are a great investment piece, but many factors affect how valuable they are. The origin of the shell, its age and even the colour can have an effect on its value. A great combination of the upholstery and shell on this particular chair, and being a trendy and modern colour, this shell definitely will be a good investment after being treated to a little love and attention.
