Parchment 1st Generation Zenith Vintage Original Eames DAX Dining Arm Chair
An all original vintage 1st generation Zenith Eames DAX dining arm shell chair is the perfect collector’s piece and looks fantastic with its very fibrous finish! This original chair is waiting to adorn your home and though a little more aged than most, it still retains the strong character these chairs are famed for!
Zenith Plastics were the first factory Eames used to produce the shell chairs and were only used for a short period in the early 1950s before Herman Miller moved production closer to the East Coast. The DAX base was one of the first bases introduced for the shells and was produced to provide a stable and functional dining chair base. The design was later changed to the distinctive ‘H’ base, though it was still known as the ‘X’ base.
The 1st generation shell has seen a long life and it has unfortunately taken a small toll on it by way of a small crack in the top corner. However, the rest of the shell is great with the strong fibrous finish and uniquely aged colour to it.
The original X base is still as strong as the day it was produced.
The shell has the distinctive large shock mounts and, more importantly, the checkerboard label and rope edge finish on the outside of the shell which indicate this is a 1st generation Zenith shell.
Eames shells vary in terms of investment value due to so many factors. The age, origin and colour of the shell coupled with its condition are key aspects along with the originality of the base the shell is upon. Though the top is a little more aged, the full original nature of this chair still means it is a reasonable investment piece to own.
