‘Speckled’ Blue Herman Miller Vintage Original Eames Upholstered DSR Side Shell Chair
Product Description
A vintage Herman Miller and Eames side shell with Alexander Girards’ ‘speckled’ Blue upholstery is amazing on its new, used black DSR base makes a great chair. The addition of fabric and naugahyde options drastically increased the versatility of the design and helped escalate their fame to the heights we know today.
The Eames shells have barely changed through their long life, retaining their modern feel with flare. Throughout their production, however, the introduction of new bases to maintain the versatility of the chairs along with the coveted upholstered range designed with the help of Alexander Girard were introduced to ensure the chairs retained their modern look.
Individual Characteristics
This particular top is in very good condition for its age, there are no signs of cracks or dents though the fabric is lifting at the back of the seat section.
The blue is a little different to the shade in the images, further pictures (of the lifting too) are available.
The shell, too, is black like the image from the back of the chair, not white.
The ‘S’ inside the circle indicates this shell came from Herman Miller’s Summit Prime factory in Michigan.
Investment Details
Eames Shell Chairs vary from 1 to 5 stars for investment. The reasons depend on so many factors but mainly the condition, the rarity of the colour, the originality of the base, the age and of course the factory of origin are some that can affect the value greatly. Whilst it may not prove to be the best investment piece, as far as classic original Eames shell’s go, it is a good sturdy example to own.
