Terracotta Herman Miller Original Eames DSW Side Shell Chair
A perfect vintage Eames side shell for Herman Miller. This terracotta DSW chair has retained an exceptional deep colour complimenting the dark black of the base. The colour of the shell seems more orange, but seen up close the subtle red tone can be seen, creating a truly beautiful version of the iconic shell chair.
The Eames shell series chairs really do not need any introduction. With early prototypes beginning in the late 1940's, production began on the Eames' dream of 'chairs for the masses' in 1950 with the arm and then the sides later in 1952/53. The original and vintage fiberglass chairs were so versatile and so modern that they only increase in popularity as the years go by.
Fiberglass originals always have a base colour and gorgeous 'visible' fibers in the shell itself. Upholstered version were introduced by Herman Miller a little later on using fabrics and textiles designed by the esteemed designer Alexander Girard.
The shell is in a generally good vintage condition but does show a small chip on the front of the seat section along its edge. This does not detract from the strength and usability of the shell chair, but may slightly impair the physical appearance of it.
The ‘C’ with the 5 pointed star on the underside of the shell indicates this shell was produced at Herman Miller’s Cincinnati factory.
Eames Shell Chairs vary from 1 to 5 stars for investment. The reasons depend on so many factors but mainly the condition, the rarity of the colour, the originality of the base, the age and of course the maker are those that determine. Though this shell is in not as great a condition as others, the strength of its colour will help see it retain a decent investment value.
